Scaling and Root Planing

Non-Surgical Introduction

Periodontal therapy consists of non-surgical and surgical approaches. Both are aimed at arresting the breakdown of the supporting structures of the teeth (including the gums) and creating a stable environment. Although there is no “cure” for periodontal disease, there are ways to control the progression and dramatically minimize the risk of tooth loss. Please read on to learn about our non-surgical services.

Initial Periodontal Therapy (Scaling and Root Planing)

The initial stage of treatment involves non-surgical periodontal debridement. This involves the removal of biofilm (soft plaque) and calculus (tartar) from above and below the gum-line and into any deep pockets (bony defects) that may be present.

This initial phase of treatment will likely involve multiple appointments, and could be performed under local anesthetic for comfort.

Four to six weeks later, periodontal pockets are eliminated due to gum shrinkage. Then the patient can personally maintain these areas with routine brushing and flossing.

Even in most severe cases of periodontal disease, non-surgical periodontal therapy most often precedes surgical therapy. This is done so that the overall tissue quality is improved prior to surgery and also limits the areas of required surgery.
